Shreya Siddanagouder’s New Hands

Shreya’s life changed in 2016, when she was 18 years old. She got into a bus accident in which both her hands were crushed. They could not be saved, so doctors amputated their limbs to the elbow.
The biggest problem was finding a donor. Due to cultural traditions, many Indian families refuse to give the hands of the deceased for transplantation to other people. In August 2017, specialists managed to get a pair of hands, despite the fact that they belonged to a dark-skinned man and were very hairy – Shreya immediately agreed to the operation.
But something happened that shocked all the doctors – the girl’s new hands began to lighten quickly, become less hairy and more feminine. Doctors believe that hormones stimulating melanin and a lack of testosterone in the girl’s body contributed to the changes.
Now, after a year of rehabilitation, the girl is completely healthy, does a manicure, writes letters and even wrote an exam with her new hands.
